Hi,

I have a direct ancestor, John CLUTTON b 1808, died Whitchurch Workhouse 1847 (I have his death certificate, the witness at death was the Beadle) who was a master in the Whitchurch National School. I have him in the 1841 census and his baptism in St Alkmunds, Whitchurch in 1808.

Several years ago I wrote to the archives who administer the National School records but they couldn't help me.

Does any kind soul have any information on either of these institutions ?

TIA

My wife has several ancestors from Witchurch and at least two have been in the union workhouse.  It was built in 1794 and subsequently became the Deermoss Hospital, now the community hospital.

I have made the trip to Shrewsbury to the archives but they say no admittance nor roles exist for the workhouse.  They do have minute books from which I have been able to extract some data and confirm that the relatives were there and the approx dates.

If anyone knows if there are any records available elsewhere I am looking for the period 1880-1900 and the names CLARKE and EGAN.

Thanks.

Hello Both

Have either of you looked at The Workhouse web site to see what information it contains.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Yes Michael I've studied the site and it is fascinating. However there's not a great detail of specific detail regarding Whitchurch.

Cheers

Hello Bob,

Suggest you get in touch with Whitchurch Visitor Information Centre, 12 St Marys St. Whitchurch SY13 1QY; 01948 664577. I have found them very helpful in the past.

Also there is the Whitchurch Historical and Archaeology Group. Website www.whitchurch-history.co.uk. Chairman Mrs Perry 01948-663332. Have a look as there are some pictures on there, but I couldn't find any of the workhouse. There are also details of booklets they have published.

When I was looking for details on the Workhouse @ Market Drayton I found the local library had some photos and bits and pieces regarding it, so that may be an option too.

Hope this helps. Hazel

In the 1881 Census for the Whitchurch Poorhouse there is a William Clutton - could this perhaps be a brother or son of John Clutton?

Hello Bob,

A bit more. There is a website being set up www.whitchurch.workhouse-heritage.co.uk which has a few details, but reading what there is the Heritage Centre sounds like your first port of call. Hazel

Hi,

Thanks for the tips and pointers.

My John Clutton did have 2 sons, William and John.

William was born in 1835, joined the Post Office in Chester, married a Mary Harrison there (coincidentally my mother's married names), transferred to the Travelling Post Office, deserted Mary in Liverpool,, had a second family in Carlisle and died in Preston in 1907. I know quite a lot about him and his families :-))

His father John just fascinates me.

I have his baptism in St Alkmunds, Whitchurch in 1808 and marriage to Elizabeth Williams in St Alkmunds on 28 August 1832 (where he is described as "from the parish of Liverpool), the 1841 census entry (master in the National School), a reference to him in the memoirs of one of the pupils at the time (apparently he was a martinet !) and his death certificate in the workhouse in 1847. As we all do about our ancestors, just want to know more if possible ;-))

There just happens to be "millions" of Cluttons in the Malpas and Whitchurch areas at the time!

I'll follow your advice Hazel and see what turns up.

Thanks very much again.

Bob
