Hello,

I have come to the 'brick wall' and need help in breaking through it.

I have a Robert SIMMONS who married Sarah TAYLOR in Edgmond on the 25 January 1814.

Sarah was born in Edgmond in 1792 (Oct 8) and died 28th March 1824, buried in St Peter's, Edgmond.

It's Robert that is the problem, I cannot find any information regarding his birth or parents.

Sarah had a illegitimate child - Joseph TAYLOR born in 1811

And 3 other children with Robert: Mary b 1814, George b 1819 d 1881 and William b 1822, all born in Edgmond.

If anyone can help in any way, I would be truly grateful, thank you

Dave

Worth trying to trace him forwards in time first to find clues about where and when he was born.

Might he be the Robert SIMMONS who married Eleanor SMITH at Edgmond on 28 Aug 1824? (See FamilySearch.) With several young children I wouldn't be surprised if he found another wife fairly quickly after Sarah's death. Eleanor may be the Eleanor SIMMONS, age 41, who was buried at Edgmond on 1832 (Shropshire Burials Index).

Might Robert also be the Robert SIMMONS who appears on the 1841 census at Edgmond, age 56, born Shropshire, with Sarah SIMMONS, 58, and children James (13), Samuel (11) and Thomas (5)? As neither of the adult's ages were rounded down they may be reasonably accurate, suggesting a birth year of 1784 or 1785. It appears that after the death of Eleanor he married a third time, this time to Sarah EVANS at Wellington on 22 Apr 1833. (See FamilySearch.)

As FamilySearch seems to have hit technical difficulties during my searches, I have now Googled "Robert Simmons" and Edgmond and found that there are several results indicating that his ancestry has been the subject of enquiry over a period of several years with the subject raised on other discussion boards - worth taking a look to see if others have already answered the question. There's an online family tree showing him as being baptised at Cheswardine in 1787. I can't vouch for its accuracy.

I see this has been a brick wall for quite some time (and some of the Google results which appeared to tie in with this query relate to another SIMMONS of Edgmond). In your post on Rootsweb in 2004 the possibility of a Robert SIMMONS baptised in Moreton Say, 1784, is mentioned. This Robert appears to be alive and well, though a widower, living with his widowed sister Elizabeth HAY in Moreton Say on the 1851 census. Checking the 1841 census also shows a Robert SYMMONDS living with an Elizabeth HAY in Moreton Wood, Moreton Say, so I suspect (given the presence of Robert SIMMONS with third wife in Edgmond in 1841) that Robert of Moreton Say is not your man.

The Robert SIMMONS baptised at Cheswardine in 1787 (suggested by Stella Gill in reply to your post on RootsWeb back in 2004) appears a more likely prospect. If we assume that this baptism followed not long after the birth, and also that the age given for Robert of Edgmond in 1841 was accurate, he would seem a tad too young - but I wouldn't rely on either assumption. Cheswardine is not far from Edgmond as Stella said in 2004 so this seems a possibility worth considering.

Another possibility is Robert SYMMONS, born 11 Sep 1785 and baptised 18 Sep 1785 at Ellesmere. A lot further away from Edgmond than Cheswardine however.

It might be worth checking the marriage registers for each of Robert's three marriages to see if any family members were witnesses, and comparing the names with those of the parents and any siblings who can be found for the Robert SIMMONS/SYMMONS born in Cheswardine and Ellesmere to see if any of them match up. Checking the burial registers of Cheswardine and Ellesmere for the possible burial in childhood of a Robert SIMMONS in the mid-late 1790s or early 1800s might also yield a find which rules one of those candidates out.

Robert SIMMONS and his brother Samuel SIMMONS were both baptised at St. Swithins, Cheswardine Parish Church.  Their parents were Robert SIMMONS and his wife Mary.  The parents do not appear in the records before the birth of their children.  Both sons went to Edgmond and married local girls.  They signed as witnesses on each others marriage records.  Samuel and his wife returned to the Cheswardine area but Robert stayed in Edgmond and married 3 times.

WOW it's been a while - where does the time go?

Thank you all for your assistance - Glynis Callan, where did you find Samuel's marriage details, I have looked almost everywhere.

I am still trying desperately to solve this conumdrum with Robert and going back to the generation before, I know Samuel as something to do with him, I have seen Samuel's 'X' on Robert's marriage to Eleanor Smith. I have found a record on Family Search about Samuel and Mary Smith's marriage on 03/10/1825 in Edgmond, but havent seen a copy of the record, to confirm Robert was a witness. Mary could be Eleanor's sister I guess.

Thank you

Dave

It is not easy to get on this site.  The above information is the same as mine.  I originally got it from a film of the Edgmond Parish Records from the Morman church.  They were hand written, but probably transcripts as the writing was all the same.  I think the writer was William Bolas.

Somewhere in the depths of my research I have a note from someone called Cassier that said that his father-in-law said that the Simmons' came from Ireland, then to Lancashire, then Shropshire.

I came across Robert Simmons marrying Mary Lee at St Peter's, Liverpool.  She was baptised there but no sign of Robert in Liverpool.

My email has changed due to "securiety issues" because I was using a different computer.  I have had to change to glyniscallan@gmail.com.

Send me a message if you need to ask me anything.
