I wondered what a Settlement examination might tell me.  Edward BLODWELL born 1734 was hired in Llanymynech as a labourer in 1771 and there is a Settlement Examination for him in Shropshire Archives.  Before I boot it up there in my car I thought I might try and find out if any information in it might be of use.  I have no knowledge of him at all and my family history on that branch stops with him - will it tell me where he comes from?

Hello Jane

Whilst Settlement Examinations probably follow a fairly standard format each one is going to be different because of the individual circumstances.

If you put 'settlement examinations family history' (without the quotes) into your favourite search engine you will find some examples and information.

I would guess that you will probably be very pleased with a day out at Shropshire Archives to look at this but do make sure they are open on the day you want to come and you will probably need a readers ticket so make sure you have some suitable identification.  Have a look at the Visiting Shropshire Archives page on their site.

There is a multi-storey car park near the archives or a surface car park just over the river in Frankwell with a footbridge link but I would suggest your best option is to use one of the three Park & Ride buses situated in the north, west and south.
