Hello all,
I'm seeking information on my 3x great grandmother Maria WALFORD. She was the daughter of a William Walford, shoemaker, and according to the 1851 census was born in Highley.
She was first married to a Scottish sailor called William JACKSON in Leamington Priors on 15th Feb 1841, while she was living at 10 Oxford Street. Her father is given as William WALFORD, shoemaker. William Jackson seems not to have lived very long after, as in 1846 she married my 3 x great grandfather George DAVIS at Cleobury Mortimer (I am currently awaiting a copy of this marriage certificate).
Maria had two children with George: Sarah (1847) and my 2x great grandfather George (1849). I have obtained a copy of George Jr's birth certificate that confirms that his mother was 'Maria Davis, late Jackson, formerly Walford'.
Maria and her family are listed as living in Highley in the 1851 census. Maria is listed as age 35 and George Sr. is listed as age 38. They are living with their two children, a visitor: Eliza WALFORD (21 - Maria's sister?) and George Sr's uncle Thomas NORREY (75) who is listed as a type of labourer I can't read:
Maria Walford died in 1858 in Highley. George Sr. appears to have never remarried.
I have found a record of a William Walford, shoemaker, living in Highley in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, but he's too young to be Maria's father (listed as age 30 in 1841). I'm wondering if he's perhaps a brother of Maria's who took on their father's trade. Matters are complicated by the fact that there seem to be a number of different William Walfords in and around Highley.
So ideally I'd like to track down the record of Maria's birth, who exactly her parents were and what siblings she had.
If anyone can help me out to find more about Maria and her family, I'd be very grateful. :)
Many thanks in advance,
Mike
Thanks for the response, Naomi! Do you know if 'Farm Labourer' is a different classification than 'Agricultural Labourer'? That's what George Davis Sr's occupation is given as a few lines above. I initially thought it was 'Farm Labourer', but then thought it strange that the ennumerator would put those down as separate titles.
Hello Mike
If you look at all the other entries on the image of the census page you will see that the enumerator uses Farm and Agricultural Labourer almost at random. To me they are one and the same thing.
Mike
i also believe that the difference between Agricultural Labourer and Farm Labourer is minimal and they would have not classified them with this precision.
Hi M,
my husband is decended from a William Walford in 1861 farmer, 1871&81 shoemaker. He had a sister Mariah born 1823 and a daughter Eliza, born 1841.
I thought his parents probably Thomas Low Walford born 1786 d 1845 and Sarah Brewer m 1803.
But maybe the dates don't fit yours?
Hi Mike, Some info for you.
Best Regards
John Paul J

Can't help on the Walfords but the occupation looks like farm labourer.
