Hey all,

I'm looking for some information on my 3xgreat grandmother, Sarah POUNTNEY. She seems to have lived most of her life in Staffordshire, but is listed in the 1851 census onwards as having been born in Alveley, Shropshire sometime between 1818 - 1821. I've tried to find a birth/baptism record for her but have so far had no luck.

In the 1841 and 1851 Censuses she's listed as living in Tettenhall, Shropshire as a live-in domestic servant. I believe that in 1853 she marries a John MONCKTON, who was widowed earlier that year. He was born in Rock, Worcestershire, and living in Pattingham, Staffordshire with three surviving children from his first marriage. Sarah settled there with him and had at least two further children, including my 2xgreat grandfather James Monckton.

So I have quite a bit of information about Sarah Pountney, but the trail seems to go cold prior to the 1841 census. I certainly can't find any references to a Sarah Pountney born in Alveley. If anyone could help me unearth any more information, I'd be very grateful.

I DID notice that on the 1841 census, although it does not tell you where she was born, it does tell you that SHE WASNT BORN IN THAT COUNTY !

Have you got their marriage cert ? Here is the reference in case you haven't. Might be worth seeing it to establish Father and possible witnesses, just may tell you more.

Hello Angela, thanks for the reference. :) I haven't seen the marriage certificate itself - I use Ancestry.com which sadly only seems to have the transcribed indexes when it comes to marriages.

The 'not-born-in-county' makes sense - she was living in Staffordshire but born in Shropshire. For me the big question is why I can't find a reference to her birth. It doesn't help that the surname 'Pountney' can be transcribed in a number of strange ways!

The only record I can find IS the marriage. This is where you can order it from if you live abroad ? Expect to pay £9.25 DO NOT ORDER ON ANCESTRY, THEY WILL CHARGE YOU LOADS !!!!!

Hello Michael, Angela,

Yes I had come across that website. Sadly it looks as if the records stop just short of the time period that Sarah was born in. Thank you anyway, it's a very interesting website. :)

Judging by other recorded births at the time, it looks as if there should be a record of her birth, but nothing comes up. Perhaps she was never registered, or is mistaken about her place of birth?

Have you got her death cert? You did say that you knew quite a lot about her after her birth.  But I would send for her marriage cert first.

Hi there,

My name is Margaret Sheridan and I research families of Alveley Village. I have a quick look through my Pountney notes for the early 1800's..and cannot so far find a baptism for Sarah..but I did find this ...

POUNTNEY CAROLINE, baptised at Alveley Church 12th August 1827 daughter of Sarah Pountney. POUNTNEY FANNY, baptised at Alveley Church 8th November 1829 daughter of Sarah Pountney.

which may prove useful..

Feel free to contact me through my Alveley History page on facebook ...just search 'Alveley Family History Shropshire'

Best wishes

Margaret
