My 5x Great Grandfather was John HUGHES. Traced to Rushbury and lived 1736-1815. Buried in Rushbury 23/01/1815 according to Shropshire Burial Records.  Cannot find any further Church records for Rushbury St Peters to trace back my family any further. Church records thought to have been lost or destroyed? I have visited and  searched both Shropshire and Herefordshire Archives but no luck. Has anyone any details or info of Rushbury St Peters records before 1736 that may prove useful? .

Hello Ben

There is an indexed transcript of the Rushbury registers at Shropshire Archives for the period 1538 to 1812 but this will have gaps because as long ago as about 1896 when a listing of Shropshire Parish Documents was compiled and published the following was written.

General Register, 1538-1677. The cover of this Register has an endorsement on it to the effect that --
1545 - 1554  )
1555 - 1560  )
1573 - 1577  )  are missing
1646 - 1650  )
1677 - 1685  )

There are some Bishop's Transcripts (BTs) at Hereford Archives covering the period 1660 - 1875.  The period 1660 - 1833 is hopefully complete but there are many gaps in the later ones. You should note that Hereford Archives is closed to the public until late spring 2015 while they move to new premises.

There is no known gravestone for your 5x great grandfather at Rushbury.

Many thanks Mike. I shall continue my research.
