For Robert LEE the LDS give a christening date of 05 April 1817 Ellesmere, Shropshire, England, parents William LEE & Margaret -  can anyone assist or advise me on how to find the actual birth date so I can order the birth cert?

You will find it difficult to order a birth certificate, as they did not exist prior to 1837...

Hello Sue

In most cases the child will have been baptised within a fairly short time after his birth. In cases where there was some delay, for whatever reason, there is just a slight chance that the vicar may have added the birth date in the margin. So, as with all entries found in the IGI and other indexes, you should check the original source to establish whether there is any additional information.

Thank you both for your feedback.  Excuse my ignorance as I am still reasonably new to genealogy, but is it the same with marriage and death certificates?

'Fraid so !

You could take a look at this site, to get a bit of background information...

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

and perhaps take comfort from the fact that they DID exist nonetheless, even without certificates !

Lots of other documents around to show their trail, such as wills, deeds, newspaper articles, court records, Census etc.

Enjoy the searching !

There were of course certificates issued before civil registration began, although not automatically and at the time for baptisms. People might ask the church for a certificate of their baptism for various purposes. The records of Shrewsbury Corporation, now at Shropshire Archives, contain all sorts of ecidence that was adduced when someone claimed the right to burgess-ship by descent, often on odd scraps.

Once again thank you for taking the time to respond - looks like it is off into another avenue of search - thanks.
