Does anyone please have information on when Rev Walter SATCHWELL joined and/or left the Baptist Chapel at Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury?  He was there by October 1874 (letter appears in Eddowes Journal) and is in Jarrow by March 1878.  Any help gratefully received.

PS I should have added "or any other Baptist chapel in the area"...!!

Trying to put a timeline together for him - he spent his final couple of decades as minister at the Attleborough Baptist Church in North Warwickshire.

Hello Jacqui

I have been given the following information by a friend.  Hopefully it will give you some leads for further research.

I've been looking through my notes on the chapels in Shrewsbury which I made for an article which appeared in the Arch. Soc. Transactions about 20 years ago (late 1990's).

There's an account of the laying of the foundation stone for the Baptist Chapel, Wyle Cop in "Eddowes Salopian Journal", 19 August 1863, page 5, column 3. The minister then was Rev. C. F. Vernon.

Another account of the same ceremony appears in the "Shrewsbury Chronicle", 21 August 1863, page 4, column 5.

According to information provided to me by Dr. Williams's Library in London, The minister 1869-1873 was Thomas Jones who then went to Aberdare. He was then succeeded by W. Satchwell 1874-?1882? In 1884 it was vacant and 1887-9 closed. It subsequently became the Salvation Army meeting place.

Dr. Williams's Library does not have a full run of the Baptist Handbook which is what is needed for its annual list of ministers, arranged under County & then place. I think the best place to try would be the Baptist Union, contact via email through their web site at:-
http://www.baptist.org.uk/Groups/220788/Contact_Us/General_Secretary/General_Secretary.aspx
If the enquirer puts "Library" or "Librarian" in the subject line of the email, it should get to the right person. They will, no doubt, have a complete run of the Baptist Handbook, which she could ask them to check for the years 1874 onwards.

Hello Mike

Thank you, and please thank your contact profusely.

That confirms he moved to Shrewsbury in 1874.  By 1878, Walter Satchwell was in Jarrow - his time there was also mentioned in his obituary. A newspaper item - Shields Daily Gazette 14 March 1878 - noted his attendance at a meeting "of Jarrow".  Please let your contact know that Walter had left Shropshire by 1878.

I emailed the Baptist Union and also the Angus Library and await responses. I will try Baptist Union again specifying the Baptist Handbook.  Fingers crossed!

I've already been to the Ryland Library to use the lists of Primitive Methodist ministers - it seems these non-conformist ministers changed their religious allegiances periodically.  Walter was initially at the Independent/Congregational Chapel in Hartshill, north Warwickshire.

So thank you VERY much indeed!

For information of anyone reading the above:

the Baptist Union say that the only place holding the Baptist Handbook series is the Angus Library, Regents Park College, Oxford.

See their website http://theangus.rpc.ox.ac.uk/
