I am researching my DOWNES family history in Shropshire and am wondering if someone could help me past some stumbling blocks.

So far, I have found my Great Grandfather William DOWNES who was born in the Childs Ercall area in 1852. According to his baptism record his parents were William and Emma DOWNES.  William moved to Stafford and that is where the ancestors continued to live. For the most part I have been able trace the family from there up to present day.

The questions I have are with regard to his parents William and Emma.   I have found William in the baptism records for 1828 with parents William and Ann, living in Colehurst Cottage.  Does anyone know where Colehurst Cottage might have been?  Also, how might I trace William and Ann (not sure where to start with this).

I have found William and Emma's marriage record in Stoke upon Tern (1850). Emma's maiden name was Parker, but her father was named Breeze.  Does this mean that her mother and father were not married, or might there be some other explanation?

I have found William and Emma in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, but I cannot find Emma in 1871, though William is not recorded as a Widower - I think he was living with various members of the family in Wem at this time. I cannot find any other records of either of them after this.

I would be really grateful for any suggestions on where to go from here.

I am doing this research online as I live in Canada.

Thanks

Hello Beryl

This link should bring up Colehurst Cottages on Google assuming you are looking for a location near Market Drayton in Shropshire.

This link should show them on Google Street view.

Thanks Mike,

This is great!   I'm not familiar with the area at all, but my Great, Great Grandfather was baptised at Drayton in Hales, so I am assuming this would be the correct area and that one of these cottages would have been his home. He was baptised in 1828 and his father was a labourer, so I wonder if these would have been agricultural cottages back then.  They look old, but I wonder if these would have been the original cottages or if they  would have replaced older ones.
