In a Will dated 1710 of Johannis WATKISS he mentions a nephew Thomas WATKISS Yeoman of 'Clorley Dolle' premises in Prees (Lydford).  Can anyone identify where this would be please? Many thanks. Sheila

Hello Sheila

How clear is the hand writing in this will?  Is it possible to read any of the letters in the place names differently?

I Googled Clorley Dole and on the "Discovering Shropshire History" site I came upon the following :

Quote "Cloverley Dole Farm - Historic Farmsteads Characterisation Project 2008 - 2010. Identified and classified from the c.1900 OS large scale mapping".

There is Cloverley Hall Christian Centre to the north east of Prees (post code SY13 4PH), and not a huge distance away. I assume the Farmsteads Project results would be at Shropshire Archives.

I hope I am not leading you astray.

Hello Sheila

Having looked at the original Will I think that Thomas WATKIS (the nephew) was of Clorly Dole in the County of Salop and that the estate being left by John WATKIS was in ..inford (?) in the parish of Prees in the County of Salop.

I think Havern is on the right track with Cloverley Dole which appears on the modern 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map at map reference  SJ 620 386 north east of Calverhall in which parish it is now situated but Calverhall didn't become a separate parish until 1726 (15 years after your will) so it was in the parish of Prees at that time which fits with the text in the will.  See the Ordnance Survey map on Bing here.

This link to Google Earth shows the farm in the middle of the screen but if you travel south back down the farm drive to the road you will see that Google has actually put the name on an adjacent property.

You can see the property on the 1880 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map courtesy of the National Library of Scotland.  It is in the bottom left hand corner.

Thank you so much.  Now I have pictures of the farm Cloverley Dole to-day mentioned in a Will 300 years ago!!  I am now picking up on the wills of the nephews and niece so this will give a good family to fit into my One Name Study. No leading astray - straight to it.
