A lot of my late 17th and early 18th century relatives have Henny Lane mentioned in death, marriage and baptism records. Trouble is, these records can be in the Kinnersley, Great Bolas or Edgmond registers. I have lots of old maps of Shropshire but can<q>t locate its exact location. It is in Cherrington or Tibberton but anybody with access to a map that can pinpoint it for me would be appreciated.

A lease of 1658 in the Lilleshall collection at Archives suggests that Rodway Green and Henny Green were synonymous. If so modern Rodway and Rodway Manor are midway on the lane between Cherrington and Kynnersley.

Another, perhaps wild, guess is that Henny was a local corruption of Adeney, south east of Tibberton village. But doubt it.

Hello Mark

According to Foxall<q>s Gazetteer of Streets, Roads and Place Names in Shropshire (available on microfiche from Shropshire FHS) Henny (presumably a small place with a few houses or even part of Tibberton) is near Tibberton and Henny Lane is also near Tibberton presumably running between Henny and Tibberton.

The problem is that I can't find Henny or Henny Lane on any old or modern map that I have. Having said that some of the roads/lanes leading from Tibberton are named on different maps. The road going almost due north is named Mill Lane on a modern map. There is a road running almost due east and just out of Tibberton another road goes off this in a north east direction - this is named Green Lane on a modern map.

The roads around Tibberton village are almost a box shape - the road forming the southern part of the box is named Birchen Lane on the 1833 one inch Ordnance Survey map.

Somehow you need to get access to the large scale Ordnance Survey maps (1:2,500 scale) for the late 1800<q>s or early 1900<q>s in the hope that these show Henny.

Hello Mark,
Regret I too can<q>t find references to <qq>Enny<qq> or <qq>Henny<qq> Lane, but may have uncovered the same references as Margaret above on:

http://www.melocki.org.uk/salop/Tibberton.html

In case you have not already researched these sources (apologies if you have), then the following might be of interest.  Scrolling a little way down, there is a reference to <qq>Tibberton Registers<qq> and an 1831 abstract covering 1719 - 1812.  Further down through the dates (of baps and burials), I looked for baps after the (14/9/1775) marriage you mention of Thomas DODD with Mary HARPER.  I could see this marriage referred to in the Edgmond Parish listing for 1775 (Sept):  <qq>Thomas Dodd of this p. & Mary Harper of p(arish). Kinnersley banns published Aug 27th, Sept 3rd & 10th<qq>.  The subsequent baps appear: (1) Edgmond - <qq>1776 Jan 8th John s. of Thomas & Mary of Henny Lane bap.<qq>; <qq>1777 Nov 25th Ann d. of Thomas & Mary Dodd of Enny Lane<qq>;  <qq>1780 Aug 8th Mary d. of (ditto)<qq>.  (2) Tibberton Registers <qq>1783 Jun 15th Thomas s. of Thomas & Mary Dodd of Cherrington bap<qq>.   I could not see any further baps for the couple in either register.

In the burials sections I note two Thomas DODDs appear.  The first is (Tibberton) <qq>1784 16th April Thomas DODD of Cherrington Bur(ied)<qq>.  Could this be the same Thomas, or another?  The second appears in the Edgmond register of 1797 <qq>Apr 23rd Thomas Dodd of Enny Lane<qq>.  One of these may be <q>your<q> Thomas, with the other possibly being one Thomas baptised: <qq>Dec 3rd 1771 Thomas s. of John and Blanch DOD<qq>(?).  This one is far too young (!) to be the one marrying Mary Harper in 1775.

You may also notice (about 1779) baps of children to a John and Blanche DODD, William and Sarah DODD and William and Ruth DODD.  HARPERs also feature, especially what appears a line from John and Ann HARPER baps (at Tibberton):  1748/Oct 16 John s of John and Ann HARPER bap; 1751/Jan 1 Wm. Harper (ditto); 1755/Jun 1 Thomas (ditto); 1757/Jun 12 Joshua (ditto); 1759/Sept 30 William (ditto); 1762/Jan 3 Charles (ditto).  Mary was said to be <qq>of Kinnersley<qq>, so assume she is not a(nother) child of this John and Ann.  Her uncle maybe?

Hope none of this distracts you from your primary search interests, but merely adds something to your picture of Dodds and Harpers in Tibberton and Edgmond areas.

Regards,
David

Thanks for all your responses. The continual references to Henny Lane in the Parish Registers, including those of Bolas and others, is why I am curious as to its exact location. It must be closer to Tibberton than anything else but you will stil find reference to Place Of Abode: Cherrington. Henny Lane.  I do have an 1839 map of Tibberton and there is a Penny Lane in the bottom right hand side.

Hi Mark

I hope I am right (it is an assumption I have made) like you I also have my family the Simpsons in various church registers as living in Henny Lane however in 4 listings it was listed as Cockmeer Heath which is now known as Conquermoor Heath and it is a dirt track halfway between Cherrington and Tibberton.

Google maps does not register it as Conquermoor Heath but some others do and if you use one of them to get a location on it you can then pinpoint it on google earth there are still various houses n building in the area. Like I say I cannot guarantee it as it is just an assumption but I think I could be right and it would fit in with why it is listed either as Tibberton or Cherrington.

Can you please point me to a map that shows Conquer Moor.

I have a feeling the farm known as The Green Farm is on that road and probably where my Dodd family were Ag Labourers. In 1912 the farm and a cottage on "Conquer Moor Heath" were sold.

Try this link http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/425799  there is a link further downnear the bottom of the page to locate on google maps select this select the satellite option then working from where Hay Street meets the B5062 go along to the left (as if heading towards Cherrington) you will see a small farm on the top side of the B5062 then there is a dirt track and then there is another small hamlet of about 5 houses this is Conquermoor Heath (Long winded version)

I am hoping this link will work better I have tried to do although I cannot guarantee it will work

According to some historical records, Henny lane was originally called Yeanny Lane.

I'm also struggling with the location of Henny Lane in Tibberton. I had made a guess that the lane was nearer Newport than Cherrington because of a hill before Newport on the B-road called Cheney Hill. Maybe over time the name had become distorted?

Henny Lane,Yenny Lane are two old names for the road that leaves the B5062 at Cherrington crossroads.

It goes in the direction of Rodway or Kynnersley, but at some point becomes the Rodway.

My ancestors the JAMES Family lived there from around 1600 to 1840 when my branch moved to Lilleshall.

But I now live on the Rodway
