Hi everyone.

I'm trying to find a marriage in Shrewsbury St Alkmund between a Philip ARIS and Mary ?. They have a child baptised there in 1815 with the name Margaret Ellen ARIS and then seem to move to Leicestershire. Mary states in later census's that she was born in Belfast, Ireland but unfortunately Philip died in 1818 so is not included in any census returns. Any help would be appreciated. I've had a look online at various sites with no join at present.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Bev

Hello Bev

The first thing that came to mind was the possibility that the surname ARIS could be a variation or interchangeable with the surname HARRIS and I think this is something you should keep an open mind about even though there are lots of references to the spelling ARIS(S).

Your Philip ARIS appears in Douglas J Elliott's book Shropshire Clock and Watchmakers published by Phillimore & Co Ltd 1979 but he only repeats the information given in the parish register.

The Shropshire FHS CD-Roms listing Shropshire Quarter Sessions and Shropshire Marriages don't have any references to ARIS but the Burials Index lists eight entries with five at Uffington, and one each at Shrewsbury St Mary, Hodnet and Berrington.  The marriage does not appear within the Shropshire collection on Find my Past so I can't help wondering if they moved to Shrewsbury after they married.  Margaret Ellen seems to be their only child baptised in Shrewsbury although Find my Past does list another twelve ARIS baptisms in Shropshire.

I can tell you that by the time of the 1881 census there were 409 people recorded with the surname ARIS plus another 175 with the spelling ARISS and in both cases they were predominately located in the counties from Warwickshire to Surrey with odd ones elsewhere.
