I am seeking information on Mary (nee HARDING) PARTON, married to William PARTON,and her children. He was an agricultural labourer in Clun. Mary was born about 1825 in Beguildy and we believe died about 1870 in Clun. Her son George PARTON was born June 1859 in Clun (can't find birth record), son William was born September 1860 in Clun (no record found), and son John Edward (my ancestor) was born on Jan. 21, 1861 in Clun (again, can't find birth record). All of her children in the 1871 census are listed as paupers at the workhouse in Bishops Castle so we think she died about 1870 and her husband could no longer care for them.

Thanks for any information you can dig up.

Hello Fiona

The first thing to note is that Beguildy is a place in Wales within the historic county of Radnorshire but the births of your family appear to have been registered in the Clun Registration District in England which was just a very short distance across the River Teme.

In recent months it has become possible to search the indexes of the General Register Office covering England and Wales from 1837 using the mother's maiden name as well as other details.

From the link above select 'order certificates online'.  Read the ordering page details then selcect 'Order Certificates Online and search the GRO historic birth and death indexes.'  You will be required to register to use the web site but it is free and worth the effort.  Then login to the site using your registration details and select 'Search the GRO Indexes' where you can select Births or Deaths.  Marriage indexes are not available on this site at the present time.

On the search page just enter the surname PARTON, the gender Male, the year 1860 +/- 2 and press Search.  You may need to scroll down to see the results where you should find your family.

Thanks Mike. I was able to find the birth dates of Mary and William PARTON's four children. However, I couldn't find a death record for Mary Parton in Clun in 1870. I think she is buried in the graveyard at Clun. Is there any records for burials there?

Thanks
Fiona
