Researching my MAPP ancestry, have come across a John Mapp marriage to Anne Turford, 06.03.1821 in Caynham / Cainham; and also a James Prince marriage to Anne Turford, 03.08.1823 in Caynham / Cainham.

Anne appears to have been baptised 17.07.1803 in Caynham / Cainham, so wouldn't have been 18 years old when marrying John Mapp?

Does anyone know if it is the same Anne Turford, and if so what became of John Mapp?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nigel Mapp

Hello Nigel

After Ann TURFORD married John MAPP 6 Mar 1821 she would have used his surname.  If he had died and she had married again in 1823 then she would have been Ann MAPP not TURFORD so the fact that there are two marriages of an Ann TURFORD in the same parish within two years of each other is pure coincidence.

It is quite possible the two girls were related (may be cousins) and the parents just happened to use the same forename for their children.

If you look at the original marriage register entries (available on Find my Past (fee payable)) you will find that the first Ann signed her name whereas the second Ann did not sign but made her mark.

Hi Mike,

Many thanks for the informative response - certainly makes sense what you say. The only other thought I had was a possible divorce from John, with Anne reverting to her maiden name before marrying again.

I tried looking at the original register as you suggested, but it seemed to take forever without loading anything - could you direct me as to where you found the information.

Thanks again.

Hello Nigel

My apologies - the link I provided didn't point to the precise point that I intended.

Go to Find my Past then select Search records from the blue bar then A-Z of record sets at the bottom. Make sure the blue bar on the left is on World or United Kingdom then type Shropshire into the search box.

At this point (which is where I intended my previous link to take you) you can select Shropshire Marriages and put Ann TURFORD in the appropriate boxes. Make sure Name Variants is ticked under First name(s) so you catch Ann and Anne.  It should bring up just four entries, two of which are at Caynham.  Click on the Transcript and/or Image (with a camera) buttons on the right to see the information. The image is of course far better because you get to see the actual register pages with your relatives signatures and you don't run the risk of any transcription errors.

If the image won't load then there is some technical problem with your computer.

Hi Mike,

Worked perfectly first time, this evening - not sure what the earlier loading problem was.

Thanks again - your help is much appreciated.
