Hi, I collect old swords, and one of my swords is a sabre. The sabre is a 1796 pattern light cavalry weapon, on the blade is th following. A gift from the shrewsbury cavalry to Mr Richard DAVIES 1809.

The Shrewsbury Cavalry was a volunteer unit set up during the Napoleonic Wars, a sort of home defence force. Richard DAVIES is the man I am interested in. From reading on the net, DAVIES looks like a local name to the region, I have not been albe to find the muster rolls of the Shrewsbury Cavalry, so can't find the man down that path.

I have found that there was a Richard DAVIES who was  a druggist in shrewsbury around this time, but I have know way of connecting the two.

Can anyone please help? Thanks. Michael

Hi Terry:

It's been a long time since you first posted this question, but the name caught my attention because one of my ancestors was named Richard Davies.  Being from Canada myself, I have been relying primarily on the records from Ancestry to trace my family history.  I believe this particular Richard Davies was born in 1774 to Richard and Alice Davies of Newmarton, Shropshire.  (All the records for this family list the father as a butcher.)  In January 1809, there is a marriage recorded for  Richard Davies and Hannah Gittins of Pontesbury.  A short time later, a son, William, was born.  In 1867, there is a death record for Richard Davies, 93 years old, in Atcham.  There are no guarantees that this information is all tied together correctly, but it may give you something to go on.
