Hi,

Does anyone know where Lee Bridge or Leigh Bridge near Dawley would have been?

My gr gr grandmother Ann Wilson gives this as her birthplace in the censuses. It is variously described as Horsehay Dawley Magna, Leigh Bridge & Lee Bridge Shropshire. On one census she mentions it is near Ironbridge. I know where Horeshay and Dawley are but I cant find Lee/Leigh Bridge. Can anyone help?

There is a Lee Bridge in the parish of Lee Brockhurst which is about 10miles north east of Shrewsbury. Lee Bridge is a small settlement situated on the River Roden just outside the village of Lee Brockhurst. An Ann Wilson was baptised on 11 August 1833 in Lee Brockhurst parish to Timothy Wilson and Martha. Could this be your Ann?

Hi Heather,

Sorry I haven't responded before. I've been away.

Yes, I think this is my Ann. It looks as if I was on the wrong track before. I've checked again and she didn't put Horseley as her birthplace but, because on one census it said Lee Bridge near Ironbridge and her family were in that area later, I must have assumed she was born there.

I now think Ironbridge was a mistake. Maybe someone else filled in the census and she had said she lived near Ironbridge so they wrongly assumed that was her birthplace, who knows.

All of the censuses say Lee/Leigh Bridge and the Ann Wilson there is exactly the right age. I've also found that family moved to the West Bromwich/ Wednesbury area later and so did my Ann although she wasn't living with her family. I think this has to be her.

thanks a lot for that,

Sylvia
