Hi there

I am researching my fathers family who seem to have spent a number of years in Ellesmere, Shropshire area.  I am trying to find more information on:

William Lee b) abt 1772 [my main line], m Margaret (I think Jackson)? - confirmation would be great!!

Children:  Edward Lee b) 1813, John b) 1815, Robert b)1817 d) 1883, Eleanor b) 1819.  Are there any more children?

Robert b) 1817 [as above] who married Sarah Ann Foulkes.  I have found the following children from their marriage:

Margaret b) 1852 d) 1855, Robert b) 1855 d) 1934, Edward b) 1857 d) 1858, Jane b 1860 d) ?

Would love any info on any of these family members.

I am also seeking information to confirm that Willaim Lee who married Jane Wright 1771 is the above William's (b abt 1772) parents.

Kind Regards

Sue Lee

A William and Margaret Lee had a son William at Ellesmere:

bap 16 Sep 1803

born 31 May 1803

which fits in with the 1801 marriage to Margaret Jackson.

Thank you for your assistance, greatly appreciated!  I am thinking that perhaps there may have even been one born prior to William as they married in 1801, perhaps a girl since this one was named William.  Really appreciate your assistance - thank you!

OMG - Fantastic!!!  Thank you so much!  I have ordered some of the certificates to make sure I am on the right track.  This site suggests that my 3rd Great Grandfather (William LEE who married Margaret) was born abt 1787, Ellesmere, Shropshire yet census information suggests he was born abt. 1772 - do you have any suggestions on how I should or could confirm either?

Hello, I'm also trying to find out more about Lees from Ellesmere. One daughter of William and Margaret Lee, Sarah, was the second wife of my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather William Hankey of Chester, married in 1841. Her sister Jane married William's brother John Trevor Hankey in 1847.

William and Sarah had a son Lee Hankey born in Chester in 1843, who married his cousin Margaret Lee in 1865. They were the parents of the artist, William Lee Hankey.

Also in my family I have the surname Trevor, which appears to be common in Ellesmere, and would like to know if there are links between the Chester Trevors and the Ellesmere ones.

Hello Sue

With references to births about half a generation apart (a generation is roughly 30 years) I think you should seriously consider the possibility that these references refer to two different individuals. Try to prove and disprove this possibility so you can be sure you are following the correct line.

Hi Rutherford

Sorry I cannot help you with information regarding the surname Trevor - but by any chance do you have death dates for William and Margaret LEE.  Margaret must have died before 1841 as I cannot find her in that census and it appears William might have died either 1852 or 1861 - do you know if any of these dates are correct?

Hi, Sue and friends,

I have just come across this website and forum and whilst I know it is 2 years since this topic was started I can confirm that Margaret Ann Lee b 1839, Ellesmere, Shropshire married Lee Hankey in the same town in 1865. Lee Hankey is my second cousin x 4 removed.

I understand they had 7 children one of whom, William Lee Hankey, became a notable British painter/artist.

I hope this is of interest. Regards, David

Hi David and welcome - thanks for your info.  Do you know if Lee Hankey's father William (b1796) married 3x = 1st Jane Oldroyd, [m1823], 2nd Sarah Lee [m1841], 3rd Harriet [m1862]?  Also do you know if Lee Hankey's mother Sarah LEE (b1806) had been married previously to a John Freeman [m1834]?
