I am a Canadian lady researching the history of the family of Samuel LANGFORD, on behalf of his descendants who are cousins of mine. I will be visiting the UK shortly, and expect to spend some time at the Shropshire Archives, and have registered for your Conference on 31 May. In anticipation of my visit, there are some things I would like to know and I ask if anyone can advise me.

I believe Samuel LANGFORD was born in Shifnal on 23 November 1783, the son of Samuel LANGFORD. Samuel the son was married to Ann WARREN on 25 February 1811 in Tong. Samuel was a gardener. In 1834 Samuel and his family emigrated to Canada with the family of William FARMER, a local fairly large landowner who lived at Brockton Court. The emigration of the FARMER family is described in documents I ordered from the Shropshire Archive, earlier, and in fonds left by the FARMER family here at our national Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa. Samuel and the LANGFORD family travelling with the FARMER family is clearly stated in a number of sources. Even Samuel`s gravestone here in the East Templeton United Church Cemetery states that Samuel was from Tong.

My objective, as a minimum, would be to identify the residence of Samuel LANGFORD in Tong prior to the family`s emigration, and photograph it for his family members here, if it still exists. I would also like to identify the residence of his father also Samuel LANGFORD, at Shifnal, and photograph it as well if it is still standing.

Indications are that Samuel LANGFORD was employed by the FARMER family, though that was not directly stated in the documents I have studied. If Samuel was employed by the FARMER family, I would therefore expect that the FARMER family owned property in Tong on which Samuel was employed. Could anyone advise how to determine if that was so ..... It is possible that there was a cottage made available to Samuel LANGFORD on that property. I would greatly appreciate any advice which could help me pin down the residence of where the LANGFORD family lived before its emigration in Tong.

I have found no indication at all in any records I have viewed as to the likely location of the home of Samuel LANGFORD the father of Samuel, in Shifnal. I would be pleased if anyone could suggest a method of discovering it. Many thanks if you can help. I would hope to meet you when I spend time at the Archives and the Conference. Cheers.

Hi Brenda,

I had previously heard about this remarkable event and there is an interesting summary on Genuki at;

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SAL/CanadaEmigrants.html

It's written by a Canadian who seems very knowledgeable about the subject.

Several times you mention your interest in the residence of Samuel LANGFORD and his employer William FARMER in Tong. However, Tong is East of Shifnal whereas the above article says William FARMER and his Staff were from the Sutton Maddock and Brockton area, both South S West of Shifnal.

By coincidence, I'm presently assisting someone with their LANGFORD family of Bridgnorth.

Hi Brenda,

I am new to researching my family, But i was wondering if you could possibly help me.

I believe my Grandad's mother was a Nellie LANGFORD born 1908, Her father we believe was a Samuel LANGFORD born 1857 in Ironbridge,

Do you know if the Samuel LANGFORD you are looking into had a brother maybe that stayed in England while he emigrated with his family?

Best regards

Katie
