I have established that my Great-Great Grandmother, Jane Evans, is buried at Kinnerley Church.

She died in August 1892.   I have the M I s list but I tend to think she was too poor to have a stone on her grave so there is no-one in the list to match.    What is the best way to find where she is buried? Which 'green mound' is hers?

Hello Kathleen

Because Jane EVANS died in 1892 she will be buried in the churchyard rather than the cemetery, which didn't open until about 1927.

If you look at the Burial Register, which is available at Shropshire Archives or on the pay web site Find my Past (put Shropshire in the Search box then select Shropshire Burials from the list then put Kinnerley in the Burial place box) you should look at the Images of the original register and try to find the burials of people who are recorded in the transcript of Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) then refer to the plan and try to establish if there is a place where your Jane could fit in the churchyard.

This is not a precise science because the spaces in the churchyard may not have been used in a regular sequence but this is as near as you are likely to get.

Thank you for that!   I have looked at the items you mentioned and it didn't occur to me to do what you suggest.    I will certainly give it a go.  K.

Just as a matter of interest I will tell you the result of my investigation.

I noted 15 names from the regiter on FMP, 8 before Jane and 7 after.   I checked them all agaist the MI list and only 4 of them appeared.   The 4 graves of these people are in totally different sections of the church grounds!       So, although my search was fruitless, it was an interesting exercise and I have found that high percentage of folk in the area, like my great-great grandmother were too poor to have a stone.

Thank you again.  K

Hello Kathleen

I should have mentioned this before. If you look at the drop down list under 'Shop' on the blue bar above you will find 'The Dovaston Book' - CD which includes your area of research and many people with the surname EVANS and provides an absolute wealth of information beyond the sort you will find in official records.
