My ancestor, John Turnbull (1789 - 1870) was a land agent at Pitchford from the 1802s until the 1850s. His agent was the third Earl of Liverpool (Charles Jenkinson). He later lived at Shrewsbury. His son James later resided at Bridgford. If anyone has any knowledge of this family, please contact me.

Hi Glen, I pay into findmypast where I can access censuses.   If you are in Oz, I can see him on various censuses if you would like me to email them to you. You may already have them but if you haven't let me know.

Thanks Angela,

I have all the census material relating to my ancestors at Pitchford and Bridgnorth, Shrophire. I was hoping some-one may have other details on the family or possibly find a long lost relative.

Yes, James and Mary Ann Turnbull resided in and around Bridgnorth for several decades, later living on the Isle of Wight.

Do you know the family at all? Great to hear from you.

Cheers, Glen.

There was a query posted on the old message board a year or two back about this John Turnbull. I recall having made searches for non-IGI baptisms and posting replies, but have nothing saved. Seem to recall origins in either Scotland or Northumberland. Angela will have this in her 1861 find.

Presumably this query is rather to look for modern descendants. One aid might be to search FreeBMD for births from 1912 onwards when one can enter merely the surname and mother’s maiden surname (if known), limiting the search, perhaps, to county or District. A letter to Shrewsbury Chronicle (kbennett@shropshirestar.co.uk) might bear some fruit.

Hi Glen, no, don't know the family, just trying to help out if you didn't have any access to records, which you obviously have. Good luck with your family.

Regards,

Angela

James TURNBULL of High Street was on the 1857 Burgess list.
James TURNBULL 50 High Street was on the 1863 Burgess list.

'Steward's 1886 Almanack' shows James TURNBULL was made Mayor in November 1868.

In the book 'Diary of George Gitton of Bridgnorth for 1866' TURNBULL is mentioned briefly on several occasions by name only. The Biographical index refers to him as James TURNBULL of 50 High St, Ironmonger as a Town Councillor in 1866 and Mayor in 1868-9.

In a book 'Bridgnorth a Pictorial History' C TURNBULL is identified in a photograph at the opening the Town Park in 1897.

Dear Gwynne,

Many thanks for this information. Very muchly appreciated. I am unable to locate any known living descendants of this James Turnbull of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, despite using FreeBDMs, familysearch and the telephone directories. I am actually a descendant of James' younger brother William, who was born at Pitchford, Shropshire in 1831. Yes, their father John Turnbull (c1789 - 1870) was reported born in the tiny village of Roddam in Northumberland.

Thanks once again for all your assistance.

Cheers,

Glen.

Hello again Gwynne,

Now that I have taken the time to properly read through your wonderful response to my enquiry, and to take on board all this detail, could I take up your kind offer and receive the finer details of Cecil James Turnbull's marriage to Ethel Margaret Deighton; as well a photograph of the Turnbull grave at  the Bridgnorth Municipal Cemetery.

If you need anything regarding family history research in the state of Victoria in Australia, please let me know. I would be very pleased to assit you where I can.

I work as an Archivist in several schools and have access to some good resources for Victoria.

Cheers, Glen.

Glen,
Whilst searching the microfilm copies of the Bridgnorth Journal, I can across this mention of your ancestor in the 29 April 1939 issue.

Death of Mr. F. TURNBULL.
Member of well-known Bridgnorth family.

The ‘Journal’ regrets to announce the death, at Hove, on Thursday, of Mr. Frederick John TURNBULL, second son of the late Mr James TURNBULL and younger brother of the well known Bridgnorth sportsman, Mr Cecil J TURNBULL.
Born in 1863, Mr TURNBULL went to Hove in 1880 and had, since then, carried on the business of a wine and spirit merchant. He was one of the finest all-round sportsmen in Sussex. In 1888 he became actively identified with Brighton Brunswick Cricket Club and proved for many years a forcing batsman and an exceptionally fine field. He also assisted the Gentlemen of Sussex several times. During the winter in the 80’s he was a well-known Rugby player with fine speed as a sprinter. He was a member of Brighton Foot Beagles Hunt, an expert in horticulture, popular after-dinner speaker and a loyal supporter of Sussex County Cricket.
Mr TURNBULL paid frequent visits to Bridgnorth and his widow is a local lady. Before her marriage she was Miss Louisa JONES, eldest daughter of Mr William JONES, of Bridgnorth.

Hello Glen

Following on from Gwynne's posting above I looked for a possible Probate for your ancestor on the listing at Ancestry. The entry reads:-

"TURNBULL Frederick John of 40 First-avenue Hove Sussex died 27 April 1939 Probate London 18 July 1939 to Louisa Turnbull widow. Effects £3184 19s 4d."

Hello Mike,

Many thanks for the details. I suspect there are no descendants of Frederick John Turnbull. Amazing that this fellow was a wine merchant, yet my father was bought up as a non-drinking Methodists.

Regards, Glen T.
