A local historian from just over the border in Gnosall Staffs had noted my interest in a certain surname also prevalent in Gnosall and sent me this link

My correpondent thinks he knows who the nice Edwardian family at the gate with their dog are.

If he is correct they are people with a name in my surname interests and the premisses are a few doors down from the vicarage in Cheswardine.

If the information given to my informant is correct the house is on Village Street Cheswardine as described by the enumerator in 190, next door but one to the Vicarage and the family are Mr William Arkinstall, aged 55 in 1901, his wife Emily and their two daughters. William Arkinstall was a tailor in 1901.

However looking at the 1901 census if these are the Arkinstalls the information that the premises was the village shop may not be correct. I say this because next door to the Arkinstall was the family of Beestons, George, wife Mary Ann and their two daughters. George is a Grocer and shpkeeper and two properties further down Mr Thomas Davies Grocer and shopkeeper again with wife and two daughters.

These people may or may not be the Arkinstalls but in view of the two shopkeepers in the close proximity I would be surprised if this house became the shop.

Does anyone have any knowledge of Ceswardine please who could shed any light?
