Does any one know if there are any records for the above organisation during WW2? My grandfather was, I'm told, a member although he would have been in his 70's at that time.

An info much appreciated. Hazel

Hello Hazel

If my memory serves me right I think I read some months ago that someone (probably one of the big commercial organisations) was in the process of digitising the Home Guard Records.

Hopefully someone might be able to add some detail.

Thanks Mike. I have now found the details of a pilot scheme on the National Archives website. However it seems to be singularly unenthuiastic about the likelyhood of finding any details of my grandfather. They also want £30 NON REFUNDABLE fee to look. That needs thought especially on a fixed income!

I have however found an interesting page on www.shropshirehistory.com about the different area of Shropshire Home Guard and where they were based etc.

I shall have to think about going further on this. Thanks once again. Hazel

Book "The Shropshire Home Guard" by Bernard Lowry availiable from Shropshire Regimental Museum at The Castle has account of HG.

Only reference I can find in the index is that Hodnet had E Company of 3rd Bn. Salop HG.

Bn. Commanding Officer = Lt. Col Lees.

Admin Office - The Corbett Estate Maket Drayton. Battalion Battle HQ - The Old Hall Cheswardine.

Google Shropshire Star Pictures from the past April 24 2015.

Picture of Hodnet HG marching through the village.

Thank you for that David. I have found the picture - none of the men look old enough to be my Grandad really He would have been 68(ish) when WW2 broke out, and I have photos of him when he was an old (at that time) man. Fascinating to see though.

I will look for the book by Bernard Lowry too. It may contain what I am looking for.

Thanks once again. Hazel

Hello,

I have an incomplete list of names of 5 Pln. (Burlton and Loppington) of 5 Coy (Wem) Shropshire HG.

The Pln. Commander was Lt. Norman Lockett of Northwood and it is possible that other Northwood residents may have served with 5 Pln.

I have contact with a long established family in Northwood who may recall a name.

I received a copy of the Bernard Lowry book on the Home Guard as a Christmas present but there is no mention of Hodnet except in the area listings.

I also looked for Northwood Debi but not a single mention. The nearest was a mention of Welshampton. I would think that your Dad would have been in the "A" company of 2nd Battalion Salop Home Guard, Drill Hall Birch Road Ellesmere with Commanding Officer Lt. Col Morris Eyton, Walford Manor Baschurch.

Most of the photos in the book are supplied by Shropshire Archives and there appear to be a number of other books on the subject. Maybe Archives have something more specific to you.

Reading this book made me realise how realistic Dads Army is - apparently training in one place had to be put back in time because the milking must be done! Shropshire was feeding the nation.
