Kia ora

I see in the index of the magazine that John Jennings was writing a History of Aleveley.  Does anyone know whether this was completed, I have ancestors who lived there in the 1500 and 1600s.  And am keen to see if anything was written about the village for that time.

Hello Bronwen

The entry in the Journal Index refers to a note by John Jennings that a book about Alveley was being produced by the Alveley Historical Society but not by him personally.  In fact there are now a total of three books that have been produced as follows:-

Images of Alveley
More Images of Alveley
History of the Chapel

The first two being mainly photographs can only cover the last hundred years or so, much later than the time your relatives lived there.  Copies can still be purchased from the Alveley Historical Society as of December 2020.

You might be interested to know that the Alveley Historical Society has transcripts of the parish registers from 1561 (the earliest surviving register) to 1812 freely available on their web site.

In addition, transcribed and indexed images of the registers up to 1900 are available on the Find my Past subscription web site. Put Shropshire in the search box at the top left to see what is available.

You will find lots more information and photographs on Margaret Sheridan's Facebook page and she is always willing to pass on her knowledge of the history of Alveley if you contact her direct.
