Hello Colin

Have a look at the info in the FAQ link above - that will give you some clues.

A reasonably unusual combination of names and known years of birth and death provide a good start for tracking down more about your grandfather. If you have access to a library which has computers available for use and which also has a library subscription to Ancestry, you could start your search for free. I have just used the Advanced Search facility at Ancestry, entering the name and birth year as given above and, since I don't have a place of birth, I have left that blank but have entered England and then Shropshire in the "Residences" part of the search form. That's enough to generate some interesting results:

1891 census: Henry A Hose, age 14, living at St Mary Newington, London, with his mother Mary J Hose. His birthplace - Queensland, Australia.

1911 census: Henry Albert Hose, age 35, married, a Private with the South Wales Borderers stationed at the Depot of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry at Copthorne, Shrewsbury. Birthplace - Cooktown, Queensland, Australia.

British Postal Service Appointment Books: Henry A Hose (no age given), appointed as a "Pman" (Postman) at Ellesmere in 1913.

No less than two lots of WWI Pension Records plus a set of Service Records (a real bonus as a large proportion of such records were destroyed by fire following enemy bombing in WWII). These again show Henry Albert Hose born in Australia, and with luck (I haven't viewed them) they should give specifics such as his weight, height, chest measurement, colour of hair and eyes, any marks / scars / tattoos, his religion, occupation prior to enlistment, details of next of kin, possibly details of children, rank and details of any promotions, details of where and when he served and with which unit(s), any disciplinary offences, wounds suffered, any gratuity or pension awarded due to wounds suffered. It appears that details of his service date back to 1893. One of the sets of records gives an address of Chapel House in Melverley.

Death registration: Henry A Hose, age 68, March quarter 1946, Oswestry Registration District.

If your library also has a subscription to Find My Past, you could view Henry's Militia records (though there may be some duplication in the information available from this source and the service records available from Ancestry). You could purchase some credits to view the record at FMP (cheaper than a subscription for accessing a small number of specific records).

Queensland BMDs can be searched online at:

https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQry.m

Searching the Births from the Historical Index Searching link, for family name Hose and date of birth range 01/01/1875 to 31/12/1876 yields a result naming Henry's parents as John Henry Edgar (Hose) and Mary Julia Bulger.

There is also an online family tree which features Henry (which I found by Googling for "Henry Albert Hose") at:

http://www.jamesfamilytree.org.uk/806.htm

This tree gives precise dates and places for Henry's birth, marriage and death, presumably obtained from certificates. This would appear to give you a good starting point, though I would add that it is always a good idea to check the work of others to see if you come to the same conclusions, just in case any mistakes have been made.

It looks like you have some fascinating ancestry to explore - enjoy!

Hi Steve, Sorry I was so long responding but have been out of the country.,that was an enormous amount of help, thank you very much, since then I have discovered more fascinating ancestry, such as Charles Hose 1863-1929 was a resident of Sarawak who put a stop to head hunting, discovered the cause of the beri-beri disease, discovered an oil-field and had lots of fauna and flora named after him as well as Fort Hose, Hose Hill and the Hose Mountain Range., his uncle was the Bishop of Singapore and his cousin Walter was the Admiral of the Royal Canadian Navy. His son Heath Roydon was travelled the world as a geologist who married a girl Mary (Maria) Robbiano from Italy, I cannot find out any more about him only that he died in Genoa the same goes for his sister Violet I know nothing about her at all except she might have married a chap named Fairbairn and I have a hunch (nothing more than that) that they may have emigrated to Canada to join her uncle Walter., do you have any idea's how I can trace them back any further., my sincerest regards.,

Hi Colin,

I am also new to this as I am also trying to trace my ancestor history and family. I am the descendant from the family from Sarawak when Charles HOSE was the resident at Baram. I have visited that place and have seen all the remnants and collections of his pictures taken during his time. My grandmother is the daughter of Charles HOSE named Josephine HOSE . I once was in contact with Brian DURRAN who formerly was attached to the Museum of London. He sent me pictures of him with Violet FAIRBAIRN. I am just wondering how are related to Charles HOSE .

Regards

Helen

Hello Helen, so nice to hear from you. Charles Hose is my 1st cousin x2. I have researched Charles extensively and have listed most of the fauna and flora he had named after him. Also his uncle the Rev George Frederick Hose, Bishop of Singapore and his daughter Gertrude had many plants named after them. His cousin Walter turned out to be Vice Admiral Sir Walter Hose CRN MBE. We are planning to go to Sarawak next year and are arranging to meet the descendants of some of the tribes of headhunters as you know Charles put an end to headhunting as well as finding the cause of the disease Beri-beri.Charles's son Heath Roydon Hose married an Italian girl Maria (Mary) and Roy as he liked to be known died in Genoa the birthplace of his wife. As for Violet Muriel Fairburn I cannot find any trace of her, I thought I had a lead that she married an American from Boston as her second marriage, don't think that led to anything though. Did she marry the rowing coach's son from Cambridge an Australian I believe? such a lot more to tell you about. I have managed to trace the Hose family back to the 1680's.

If you should wish to reply would you be so kind to, to my email address I find this site too hard to navigate. My EMail address is 'cmhose8@gmail.com'.

My best wishes to you.,

Colin Michael Hose.
