My uncle died 05/02/1944 aged 33 years in Shropshire and I believe he is buried in Shrewsbury.

His name was Patrick MAGUIRE, born 09/05/1910.

He left Belfast to work in Shropshire as part of the war effort after being turned down by the army.

if anyone can help me find his grave it would be much appreciated.

Hello

There seems to be a problem with the information you have.

The only death in the indexes which is close is for Patrick J MAGUIRE age 33 in the Q1 (Jan-Feb-Mar quarter) of 1944 but the death was registered in the Surrey S.E. Registration District Ref.No: 2a 939.

There is a Patrick T MAGUIRE who's death is recorded in the Shrewsbury Reg. Dist. Q1 1942. He was aged 31 years.

Do you know the middle forename for your Patrick because that would help to clear this up?  Is there any information in the family to suggest that he might have worked in Surrey?

If your relative is the one who died in Surrey then it is difficult to guess whether he would have been buried there or brought to Shrewsbury for burial if his family lived in Shrewsbury.

Thanks Mike,

I have checked my uncles birth certificate and there is no middle forename recorded though he may have used a confirmation name.

I have spoken to my mother (his Sister) who is adament about the location of his death (Shropshire ) and date of death being 5th of Feburary but not sure of the year.

From the information you have given me I believe that the Patrick T Maguire whose death is recorded in the Shrewsbury District is most likely my uncle.

He lived his whole life in Northern Ireland and was working in Shropshire for a short time before taking ill, being rushed to hospital and dying in hospital.

The family were unable to get the body home due to travel restrictions during the war.  His funeral was attended by his father and his brother who was home on leave at the time.

How do I follow this up?  Can I get access to any documentation giving his home address or next of kin etc..?

His fathers name was Robert.

His mothers name was Mary Anne.

His home address was 16 St Quentin Park, Glangormley, Northern Ireland.

Thanks again for all your help.

(Note; somtimes his name is mistakenly spelt Mc Guire)

Hello

If your relative was buried in Shrewsbury in the 1940's then it will almost certainly have been in Longden Road Cemetery.

There are microfiche copies of the registers at Shropshire Archives and you can find more information on this page.

If you can't get there yourself then your best option is to employ a local researcher to look at the records for you.  Here is an email address for one researcher who advertises in the Shropshire FHS Journal, you may find others.
