My name is Rennie Hackett and I live in Bolton Lancashire. I have been trying to trace the name line of my family as far back as possible.

The SFHS Web-Site reveals there are monumental inscriptions bearing my family name in 2 places in Shropshire however they say the microfiches or booklets with more detail can be purchased but I can find no way of being able to do this on the Web-Site. Can anyone help?

The earliest I can trace our name back is to a Thomas HACKETT (born circa 1781 in either Wrockwardine wood or Long(ton) Staffs).

He spent all his married life in Wrockwardine Wood as a labourer on Pit Banks, his sons also worked there (1851 census) and he died in 1854. I have been unable to find out his wife Mary's  maiden name but she was born in Edgmond in 1792 and I am also unable to find the date and place of their marriage.

Reading the local history around the Wrockwardine Wood area in the 19th Century (he lived in The Nabb area) I have come to the conclusion that possibly his family, as were many others, were Primitive Methodists and attended the chapel built in the Nabb area.

Does anyone know if there was/is a cemetery there? Does the chapel still exist?

Hello Rennie

If you want to buy copies of Shropshire Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) either as photocopied booklets or on microfiche go to 'Shop' (top right of this page) then choose the top option 'Shropshire FHS Publications Catalogue' then at bottom left under 'Attachment' download the file 'SFHS_Publications 120430.pdf'.  You will find the parishes in alphabetical order so Wrockwardine Wood (note correct spelling) will be near the bottom.

Hi Rennie,

Joseph HACKETT is my 3rd great grandfather. He married Mary PERRY in Lilleshall on 21st Feb 1814 (Source: Shropshire Marriage Index 1538-1837). Mary was baptised on 11th August 1791 in Edgmond. Her parents were Thomas Perry & Jane SUTTON. As for Joseph, I have had no luck so far in tracing where he was born, other than I don't think it was in Longton, as I have checked this parish register......maybe Longdon or Longnor? Searching parish registers from Australia is a bit of a process I'm afraid.

How are you related to Joseph?

Rennie

My family originated from Wrockwardine Wood.  The Wrockwardine Wood Primitive Methodist Church was built at the bottom of Wrockwardine Wood incline plane of years ago.  It still stands along with all the gravestones, my Uncle and Aunt having a grave there.  My Mother, for a short time, played the organ at some of the services there.  It is up for sale, don't know if it has been sold as this was last Easter or before. It was still in use in 2004 when my Mother died.  The Nabb Chapel is a tin building and a picture can be seen somewhere on the internet.  Just key in The Nabb Chapel, Shropshire.  That is now being lived in by a family.
