I am decended from Gittins of Baschurch.

My Grandfather was David. His father was George born in Kinter married to Eliza Ellis of Four Crosses, Llansantffraid.

His father was Thomas born in Great Ness married to Sarah.

They both appear all to have been Blacksmiths in Baschurch.

We will be staying close to Baschurch for a few days in about 3 weeks time and want to explore where the family lived and worked.  I see there is a Smithy preserved in Baschurch and I'd like to find out if it was the one where my ancestors worked.

I have an address of 54 Boreatton where George was born and would like to find it but can't so far find it. Ive seen the Lodge and Park but that's all.

I also have an address for George of 114 Gashouse, next to Game Keepees house, Gardeners House and Birch Rask Farm which I gather are near Baschurch but I can't find it.

Any help about this family will be gratefully received.

Hello Dave

As far as I am aware there is no such place as Kinter using that spelling.  Having looked at the original census entry I can't work out what place name it is trying to represent so I suggest you look up your George GITTINS in other census entries in the hope that one of them is written more clearly and you can decide what the true name of his birth place is.

Near the bottom of your message you refer to, "an address for George of 114 Gashouse" but you should be aware that the number 114 is not a street address, it is a sequential schedule number for the entry for the family and bears no relationship to any street address.

What was the source of your reference to, "54 Boreatton" where George was born?  The same may apply to this reference.

Hello Mike,

Thanks very much for your reply.

I now have a corrected Census formshowing Kinton is the one, a hamlet In the Parish of Great Ness.  His father Thomas was a Blacksmith in Baschurch nearby but it looks like he was living in Kinton at the time of Georges birth.

Yes I see what you mean about the numbers not being relevant. So I'm looking for Gashouse in Kinton which may have been part of the farm I mentioned above. Or perhaps at the Hall, lodge or Park.

Also about any Gittins who may have worked as Blacksmiths in Baschurch.

The manuscript Census shows Boreatton in the Parish of Baschurch.  I would like to know where it is as I can't find it on google search.

Any help greatfully received

Dave

Hello Dave

According to my gazetteer of Shropshire place names Gas House was at Boreatton, a country Hall a short distance north west of Baschurch.  At the moment I can't find Gas House on any maps but you might find it easier to see the general location on Bing maps using this link

You should be aware that for many years now Boreatton Park has been used as an Outdoor Activities Centre which is closed at present due to the pandemic.
