Six months ago I bought a new computer.  Unfortunately it has no disc drive so I cannot install FTM by disc.  I have tried to google a download and cannot see how to do it.  I notice other members have been successful in doing it so would be keen to know how?

Hello Jean

The first thing to check is whether your computer is running Windows software, probably Win 10 Home if it is.  The other possibility is that it could be a Chrome Book running Google software in which case I don't think you will be able to use FTM.

Provided you are running the Windows operating system there are a few possibilities.  You will almost certainly have at least one USB (Universal Serial Bus) port which you can use to insert a USB Memory Stick or you could buy a CD/DVD Drive for about £15 upwards depending on type.

Have a look at the Family Tree Maker 2017 web site which is now part of Mackiev.com to see if there are any answers in the FAQ or Support pages.

I bought a separate disc drive with USB port and couldn't seem to do it, but will try again and take your advice as above.  Fortunately I do have everything down on paper so all is not lost.

Hi Michael:  I contacted the company who said I needed to download the Upgrade at a cost of about £60.  Not so sure as I spoke to someone who had an offer of £30.  I will patiently wait to see if I get the offer.  The new 2017 version is a lot cheaper.  If I bought the 2017 would I be able to bring my 2010 data, which is on a separate hard drive?  Thanks for your help.

Hello Jean

Some months ago the new version of Family Tree Maker from Mackiev was being offered at a discount to existing customers of the older version but I don't know what the situation is now.  Have a search round for the best price.

You shouldn't have any problem loading your data from the old version into the 2017 version.

Thank you Mike.  A person suggested that I open it up as a Gedcom file but the FTM has to be opened first and saved as a Gedcom.  I have tried doing it from file windows and it doesn't work so it looks like I have to spend a little money if I wish to proceed.  I will wait and see if I get a good offer.  Thanks for your help and advice.
