I assume that the information about the two "candidates" born about 1785 came from the 1851 or a later Census. (Helps us if sources are quoted at the start).

Angela deals with one of these but she will not have found the Llansilin one because that is in Denbighshire and not coivered, or at least not in a normal surname way, by the IGI.

Those registers should be at Denbighshire Record Office. Try their website. Otherwise, if they have been transcribed, they might be available via Find My Past - for a fee.

No I have information from parish registers and other records

 Thomas Evans b 1747 married Margaret Howell b 1744 in 1773

Their son Morris or Maurice was born in Trefarclawdd in 1785 and Married Letitia Probert in 1810

Their son also Maurice evans was born in Ruabon in 1820

I am researching this family for a BBC Wales family history programme Coming Home and would be interested in contacting living decsendants of the Evans family of Trefarclawdd

Noted, but my comments were for the original poster who had seemingly a problem of two candidates, presumably seen (cannot check at home) in 1851 or later Census, one from Oswestry, one from Llansilin. You deal with the former. I note, by the way, from the lower case private entries in IGI that the Evans inTrefarclawdd track is already explored.

What is the occupation of your Morris Evans?

The Llansilin record reads:

Morris, s. of Edwd Evans, of Tre yr clawdd, Labourer & Jane [Jones], bpt. ? June 1785, b. 17 June

The Oswestry record reads:

11 Sep 1785 Morris, s. of Thomas Evans, Treferclawdd, & Margaret, b. 01 Sep 1785 bap.

Going on the information above, the one Morris is listed at Oswestry:

04 Oct 1812 George, s. of Morris Evans, Treferclawdd, engineer, & Letitia, b. 10 Sep 1812 bap.

It is unlikely that this Morris would be the son of a labourer. Was your Morris Evans also a labourer? If so, he was probably the son of Edward. You will need to research both families. A will of Thomas Evans may be able to prove, which one is which. These wills can be viewed online at:

Engineer here probably means the man who minded a colliery engine - plenty of them nearby. As we are not talking about an engineering profession that required "substance" to join, there is no reason to disqualify a son of a labourer. (Am fairly sure that I have examples from the Westbury / Alberbury area).
