Downes Family Hindford Shropshire.  I am researching the Downes family.  Father Alfred,  Mother Amelia and 3 x sons - Frederick Manwaring (believed emigrated to New Zealand/Australia early 1900's) George and Joseph Edward. Alfred's mother was Harriet Davies (no further information available) and he was adopted by Sarah and Joseph Downes in 1850..   If any person has any information on this family I would appreciate contact.

Hello. It usually helps to know a bit more of what you know; but this may be the marriage (or at least the names appear on the same page in the GRO index): Alfred Downes and Amelia Jones married March (= first) quarter 1873 Oswestry District ref 6a 1006. Go into www.freebmd.org.uk to see this, and guidance as to how to buy the certificate.

Next 1881 Census (which you can see for free via Family Search). Alfred and Amelia, with the three sons whom you mention, are at cottage, Baschurch, Alfred aged 30, born in Oswestry (which might mean anywhere in that large parish. Hindford, however, was / is in Whittington parish.

You should be able to track back from the above info using using normal techniques. If you are new to all this, try starting with the FAQ icon above.

There seems to be only one possibility via FreeBMD for the birth of Alfred Davies in Oswestry District between 1848 and 1852 both inc, namely December quarter 1850. And only one for Amelia Jones in Ellesmere District (to fit with stated birth at Tetchill), namely March quarter 1854, which fits with 1881 age.

Just wonder if their first son's second name of Manwaring might be a clue to Alfred's paternity.

Martyn

Thank you so much for the information in response to my posting.   Sorry for the lack of information I gave but I do have some proven facts.:  I have Alfreds birth and marriage Certs.  I know that Alfred was born to Harriet Davies and was adopted more or less at birth by Sarah & Joseph Downs.  I also know that the family with the exception of George were all together on the 1891 Census but can find no trace of them on the 1901 Census.   I also know that Alfred died in Manchester in 1918 but cannot find any trace of Amelia either on the 1901 Census or in the BMD's. I would like to find out what happened to Amelia and Frederick Manwaring Downs who I believe emigrated to Australia or Canada.  My father always said it was Australia but I have found a Frederick Manwaring in New Zealand.
