My grandfather William ORTON was born in Childs Ercall in 1921, his mother's maiden name was Marion Hannah DODDS, she was born and bred in Childs Ercall, shortly after her death, I believe in the twenties, the family moved to Sutton Coldfield, West Mids. I am trying to find out more about my Great grandmother's family, can anyone help?

The birth of Marion Hannah DODD, not Dodds, was registered in June (ie second) quarter 1895 in Market Drayton District. She was married as Marion E Dodd to Arthur Orton in June quarter  1920 in Tamworth District.

These come from the website FreeBMD. Go i

Bit more. Using the Mormons' Family Search site you can consult the 1881 Census for free. You might try surname Dodd only for England / Shropshre / Childs Ercall. There were four households of Dodd; and my guess is that the first three groups are your family, starting with widowed HANNAH who may turn out to be grandmother of Marion Hannah.

Using "edit" icon on your computer you can copy and paste the individual pages into a Word document and convert table to text for easier storage. Right click on the underlined names to remove hyperlinks.

While waiting for Marion's birth cert you can toy with finding in FreeBMD the post-1837 births and marriages of these 1881 people.

Sorry am unable to assist with 1901 Census - not subscribed.

Yet more; but this is just guesswork.

Richard Dodd bap 24.12.1809 at Great Bolas, son of William and Jane. Died aged 66 Sep quarter 1876 in Market Drayton District. Married June quarter 1841 in same Hannah Bratton. She bap 25.2.1816 in Market Drayton parish, daughter of John and Elizabeth (fitting with age and place stated in 1881). Hannah Dodd died aged 74 June quarter 1890 in same district.

If Richard, bap 1809, turns out to be relevant, Dodds in Great Bolas may already have been studied by Mr Mark Dodd (thread below on Harper).

Marion H Dodd was in parish of Stapenhill, near Burton on Trent at 1901 Census. This for free in index only. www.1901censusonline.com . Seemingly no other Dodd in the parish, so query: alone as a visitor? or mother remarried? or in an institution?

(You can, by the way, find all of the name Dodd in that Census, any age, who were born in Childs Ercall. Quite a lot).

So, you might try the 1911 Census via Find my past. Pay as you go. But same absence of other Dodds might arise.

But really, partic in above circs, you cannot avoid buying her birth cert. Essential link in chain of evidence.

Hazel, your information seems to tie in well with the 1881 Census where an appropriate Richard Dodd is living unmarried in Childs Ercall with his widowed mother Hannah, he then aged 28; and thus with my earlier suggestions. Linda ought of course to confirm the chain with GRO certificates.

Linda may wish to leave for the moment research into Marion Hannah's mother's side; but as and when, that mother, Tabitha Biddulph Beeston was bap 1.12.1858 at St Mark's, Birmingam, daughter of George and Hannah (who may also, I surmise, have been known as Johannah).

In 1881 Tabitha and an elder sister are with stated aunt Ann Wilson, widow, in Stapenhill (which these days is a south-eastern suburb of Burton-on-Trent). Ann - a grocer aged 68 born in Alrewas (between Lichfield and Burton). And she, I guess was Ann Biddulph bap 7.6.1812 at Alrewas, daughter of Sampson and Esther, and married to Thomas Wilson in Dec qu 1843 in Burton District.

Tabitha's parents are, I think, the George Beeston and wife Hannah who are living alone at Alford Brook, Childs Ercall in 1881, he a laabourer age 52, born in (next door) Hinstock, she 54, born in Burton. A "parent<" seach - ask when ready, Linda - of IGI shows Sampson and Esther Biddulph moving on from Alrewas to Burton.

Beeston was, I believe, a widespread surname in and around Market Drayton and at all levels. The most prominent, and elegant, monument in MD churchyard is to William Beeston, died 1846, from memory a surgeon.

The IGI suggests some regular use of Tabitha as a name for Beestons.

Yes, Gena. Hazel has already reported Marion with her parents in 1911 Census - see main thread. So far the Dodd line goes back to William's marriage in 1807. I shall leave you to liaise with Linda from there back.

In 1901 Mrs Esther Felton was Marion's maternal aunt, Esther Besston, bap in 1856 in B'ham and with her parents George and Hannah, and younger sister Tabitha (to become Mrs Richard Dodd) with  George's wdowed father Richard at Ercall Heath (next to Childs Ercall Rectory) at 1861 Census (RG9/1895/96/13), seen today at Archives.

I have more on Beeston and Biddulph but do not want to spoil Linda's fun, unless she would welcome input. Sampson Biddulph and wife Esther are in 1851 Census in Tutbury, Staffs (HO107/2011/665/37).
