Hello, I'm looking for information on the COLLINGWOOD family of Dawley, Shropshire.
Catherine Ann EVANS b.1850 of Dawley married George COLLINGWOOD (my G Uncle) from Yorkshire, they had fourteen children, most of whom were born and/or baptised in Dawley or Horsehay.
George and Catherine Ann were living at 82 Park Lane, Madeley in 1911 then emigrated to Canada the following year, some of their children also went to Canada.
I have gathered quite a lot of info on this family but there is a lot 'missing' that I can't find on the main genealogy sites, for instance their last child, Nora Desmond COLLINGWOOD born in the 1890's is not listed in any BMD's but is seen on some emigration records going between England and Canada.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony,

It was with great interest that I read your notes on the Collingwood family.

My wife, Joan, is the grand daughter of Wilfred Collingwood, one of the children of George and Catherine Collingwood of Madeley. He was born in 1886 and appears with his parents on the 1891 and 1901 censuses, but not on the 1911 census. He married Harriet Annie Severn in Alfreton in 1914..

As you say, the family left Madeley in 1912 for Canada, leaving two of their sons, Robert and Thomas behind to join the army, where both were killed in the First World War.

I believe that Katie Adele Collingwood was the illegit. daughter of Florence Collingwood - she appears on the 1921 Canadian census as Katie Dow, living with her grandparents in Ontario.

I would like to know where Wilfrid was in 1911, as he does not appear either on the U.K. or Canadian census for that year.

Hope this helps.

Hello Kerry

Thanks for your reply.  I can't find Wilfred in 1911 on any of the genealogy sites or whether he may have been overseas or in the armed forces.

Kate Adele was the illegitimate daugher of Florence, she remained in Canada and married a Charles Garner and had at least seven children, she died in Quebec in 2003.  Florence married  Henry Archibald Hamilton and died in Ottawa in 1973.

If I have it right,  Wilfred's mother Catherine Ann returned to England in 1934 after George had died the previous year, she died in Lancashire in 1940.

I have a lot of information on the Collingwoods that I can send  if you like, does Joan have any info on what happened to the siblings of Wilfred?.

regards

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply.

Wilfrid COLLINGWOOD was bap. at Dawley Parva on 27 June, 1886, son of George and Catherine  Anne COLLINGWOOD.

He appears on both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses with his parents, Elizabeth, Kate, Florence and Robert, but not on the 1911 Census. In 1904 there is a record of a W.Collingwood age 18, leaving U.K. for Canada on the Ionian - this cold have been WILFRID, if so he must have returned before 1914.

1914. Feb.14th.Wilfrid COLLINGWOOD age 24, Bachelor, Collier of Alfreton, married Harriet Annie Severn Spinster of Swanwick.at St.Andrews, Swanwick, Derbyshire. Wilfrid gives his father as George COLLINGWOOD, a plumber.

Wilfrid and Harriet had 4 children -

1.Ada Louvain COLLINGWOOD born 19th April,1916 - who married John MacDonald JOHNSTON in St. Asaph, Debighshire in 1952, and who had 3 children -0 Alan, Joan and Irene. I am married to Joan; we have 1 son Samuel; Irene has 2 children and 1 grandchild; Alan has 2 children and 2 grandchildren.

2.Joe C COLLINGWOOD. born 1918, who married Olive HARRIS in Belper in 1939, and had two children, Carol and Malcolm.

3.Gregory COLLINGWOOD born June 1918; died 1921

4. Stuart COLLINGWOOD. BORN jUNE 1924; Died Dec.1924.

Harriet died in Dec.1926 age just 33. Wilfrid married Lucy BARLOW in 1943, and died in Belper in 1966.

Regarding the COLLINGWOOD family history, George COLLINGWOOD was born in Bramley, Leeds in 1851. He married Catherine Anne EVANS in 1873.

George COLLINGWOOD 's parents were William COLLINGWOOD and Anne SMITH. I have the family on the 1841, 1851 1861 and 1871 Censuses living in Bramley,Leeds.

William COLLINGWOOD appears to have been born in Durham, Chapel on the Wardle c.1811. I can find nothing regarding either his baptism or parents. If you have any further info regarding the COLLINGWOODS, we would be pleased to see it.

Regards,

KERRY

Hi all, I am also researching George Collingwood and wife Catherine Ann Evans through their daughter Florence May Collingwood and her marriage to Archibald Hamilton in Canada in 1916. It appears yes father George died here in Canada in 1933 and mother Catherine Ann returned the following year to die in England.I too am confused with Nora Desmond and why George and some of the children lived in Madely Shropshire on the 1911 census (indexed as Collenwood) and Catherine and Ellen (Nellie) were living alone in Pendleton Lancs. Any further info appreciated.

Thank

Jackie (Canada)
