The Rev Morgan JONES came to Edgton in 1892. That first Christmas in the remote village, he was often in the company of Miss Helen SCHOLDING, the new schoolmistress. He took tea at her cottage and she dined at the vicarage every Sunday and on St. Stephen's Day. Miss SCHOLDING left Edgton in 1893 wishing to be closer to her family in Essex. But the vicar's critics whispered that he drove her off because she refused to sleep with him. "You could have been happy as a Queen, had you only done as I wished," he supposedly told her. Not until a Consistory Court in 1896 did the full Christmas Story unfold.
