I am looking for any information about the Nichols family who used to own Chelmarsh Hall. The Nichols and the Marcy families go back to 1805, where Elizabeth Nichols married George Marcy.

Many thanks

Hi Adrian,
Do you have the Monumental Inscriptions for Chelmarsh as published by the Society?
There is a John NICHOLS Esq of Chelmarsh Hall who died in 1867 .........
Also, inside the Church there are three memorials to several NICHOLS.
Thomas, a Minister who died in 1654 and his wife Jon.
William who died in 1801, son of William and Mary. Also his wife Ann and their son John.

Regards, Gwynne

Hi,

Additional information about the NICHOLS family.

Source was 'Documents concerning the Parish of Chelmarsh' published by Shropshire Archives.

The Shropshire Lay Subsidy Roll of 1327 mentions an Alic NICHOLES in Chelmarsh.

Shropshire Heath Tax Roll of 1672 for Chelmarsh mentions;
William NICCOLLS    2 hearths   4pence tax.
Thomas NICCOLLS    1 hearth   2pence tax.

Vicars and Curates of Chelmarsh.
Thomas NICHOLS,  Clerk Vicar 1615 – 1616  March 5th.  Died 1654.
William NICHOLS  1774.  Curate for 27 years. Also Minister of St Mary Magdalene, Bridgnorth and of Quatford. M.A. Christ Church Oxford.  He died 4th September. Buried 8th September 1801.

William NICHOLS MARCEY of Bewdley was once Lord of The Manor of Chelmarsh.

Chelmarsh Hall remained a monastic property until the Dissolution in 1538 when it appears to have been bought by the NICHOLS family.
