Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please? I live in B'ham,UK and am researching my family in Shropshire. My great grandfather Albert BRICKWELL and his family originated in Thame, moving to Much Wenlock around 1904. Albert was a bootmaker and had a shop at no 17 High Street, which prior to this belonged to a William Evans, also a shoemaker.

Albert was married to Edith(nee BOWERMAN) and they had 6 children:-

  • Edward William (my grandfather)
  • Florence Annie
  • George E(dward?)
  • Stanley Walter
  • Leslie Charles
  • Albert Ernest.

Albert Sr, was elected councillor for Much Wenlock Town Council in 1935 and 1937.

It seems that the family was popular and well-liked, a Much Wenlock resident told me some years ago that she remembered him standing on the step of his shop during the flood (in the 1930's, I think), watching the water rush down the High Street.Apparently 2 of his children committed suicide, with rumours of mental illness, or fear of it.

I have traced some of the family but it seems that one of the brothers, Leslie, caused a rift within the family at some point and so I have lost track of half of the brothers. To complicate matters further, I have been told that a second BRICKWELL family lived in the area, possibly related but coming from West Bromwich!

It seems unlikely that anyone would still be living who would remember any of this but I thought I would ask if anyone else has come across, or has links to these names?

I would be very grateful for any further information,Thank's for reading.

Hello, sounds like you could be a relative. My grandfathers name was Leslie BRICKWELL and his brother lived with us, his name was George Eggbert BRICKWELL. I don't know much about Leslie, he was dead before I was born. He moved to Cheltenham for work when my dad was a child, from Shropshire, his name is Ronald. Not sure if this is any help.

Hello

If you look your family up on the 1911 census you will find the children in a different order but more important there are several that you don't have listed and two you list don't appear so some careful checking needs to be done to establish who their children were. The places of birth will also be useful to you.

The oldest three, and possibly four, will also appear on the 1901 census.

Hello E-Hollard,thanks for your reply. We are second cousins, I think, as our grandfathers were brothers. George Egbert BRICKWELL was,as you say, another brother and I remember Uncle George visiting us 2 or 3 times when I was a child. I now have the following list of the children of Albert BRICKWELL(1873-1955) and Edith, nee BOWERMAN(1871-1950)-

  • Edward William (my grandfather) 1896-1959
  • Albert Ernest 1898-1975
  • Gladys Edith 1899-1982
  • Eva Rose 1901-?
  • Frederick Joe 1902-1978
  • Stanley Walter 1907-1992
  • Florence Annie 1909-1989
  • Leslie Charles (your grandfather) 1911-1953
  • George Egbert 1913-1988

I knew Albert,he married Ida and they lived in Clent. My parents stayed in touch with him, Gladys, Stanley, Florence and George. I don't recall hearing anything about Eva, Frederick or Leslie, so I assume that they were the ones we had no contact with due to the family rift.

I would love to hear a little more about your family if you don't mind sharing, are you still in Cheltenham? Do you have any siblings and/or children? My Grandad, Edward, married Ada WORGAN from South Wales and they only had 1 child, my mother Sylvia. She married my father,Stanislaw, and had my older brother and myself.

Thank you for taking the time to reply,it's great to hear from someone who is related and comes from the side of the family I know little about

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your reply. Since my original post, I have researched further and believe that I now have the correct list of family. Strangely, it seems that Gladys Edith was alternatively known as Georgina Edith!

There is also a question mark over a possible sibling called Ethel/Edith/Eddie,which I am still trying to unravel.

        Thanks, Jan

Hello, I am E.Hollard's mother and ex wife of Ronald and ex daughter in law of Leslie. I think Uncle Albert lived in Worcester and Aunty Gladys lived in Bridgnorth. We went up to see her on a couple of occasions. I have a feeling she also liked to be called Ethal. As far as I know, Leslie's parents lived in Ironbridge and we went up to Ironbridge to see where the house was. I gather there should be baptism records at the parish church there.  Aunty Eva was married to a local magistrate and committed suicide in the late 50/60's. Ronald Brickwell is still alive as is his brother Graham and sister Jean. Uncle George lived with us till his passing in 1988. He had suffered from parkinson's desease for many years.  Our branch of the BRICKWELL name goes on as I also have a son Christopher BRICKWELL and grandchildren who also bare the name. You are welcome to contact me via email or via my facebook page. If you wish to contact Ron, he could answer many of the questions you have. Ask my daughter to contact him as I dont think he has an email address. Penny Brickwell

Hi, I have spoken to my dad. He has some information which he will hunt out, he asked which members of the family do you know about  and which did you want more information on. He did also say that his grandfather Albert snr was a nasty man and caused much of the upset in the family, his grandmother though was a lovely lady. I still live in Cheltenham with my 2 children and as my mother has written my brother Chris still carries on the name of Brickwell. Do you have any children? Does you mother remember much about the Brickwells? My dad thinks Albert had about 13 children, also that 2 died as babies.

I look forward tto hearing from you.

Hi Elaine,

Thank you for the reply,I'm fascinated to hear that Albert snr was the cause of the family problems,we knew there was some kind of rift but not who caused it or why.

Edward William,my grandad, died when I was 4 but I do remember him.Sadly,he had some form of dementia at the end but remained at home where my gran cared for him. That was Ada,nee Worgan. They had only one child,my mother Sylvia who married my dad,Stanislaw Brodnicki in 1949,so the Brickwell name was not carried on along our line.We all lived in Tyseley,Birmingham-Edward had been a coal miner in South Wales, where Ada was born, but the family moved to Birmingham around 1930,as Edward found work on the railways here.

I know Albert Brickwell snr was married to Edith, nee Bowerman and have found evidence for children called Edward(my grandad),Albert,Gladys Edith,Eva Rose,Frederick Joe,Stanley Walter,Florence Annie,Leslie Charles,George Egbert and Ethel or Edie.

Mom is now deceased but she remembered Albert snr had a shoe repair shop in Much Wenlock, indeed I have visited it in the past.We used to visit Uncle Albert who married late in life to Ida.They lived in Clent and had no children. We would visit them in the summer and go for long walks in the Clent hills.

I recall talk of Auntie Glays,Uncle Stan,Auntie Flo and also Uncle George used to visit occasionally, but I know very little about them.I had never heard of Eva,Frederick,Leslie or Ethel until I started looking into the family tree,so any information about any of them would be lovely. My mom also said that 2 of the siblings had commited suicide but I don't know any details.

I am divorced and have returned to my maiden name of Brodnicki-I have a daughter, married with 3 boys and a son.We all still live in Birmingham.I have one brother, married with 4 children, all grown up-the eldest lives in New Zealand now.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply!I would love to hear any further info that your dad may have, you can e-mail me if you like,

Look forward to a further chat,Jan
