This is the problem/mystery.
Arthur was born 1899 in Ellesmere, mother was Cecilia Frances Wiese.
On the birth certificate (that we only recently received) father had been added after original registration.
His name is Thomas Edward Chetwood.
So Arthur was registered as Arthur Wiese and Arthur Chetwood.
But just to make things more complicated in 1901 census he was a boarder with a Barlow family.
Then in 1911 he was living with his grandmother Ruth Wiese.
Cecilia never married nor did Thomas Edward Chetwood.
Would Thomas have had to pay support for Arthur? are there records for this any where that might be searchable?
In 1920 he married Mary Ellen Jackson but his name on the marriage certificate was Arthur Barlow, plus he listed father as Barlow.
Are there any documents or data available between the census that may show him.
I was thinking school or some trade something that might piece together this mystery.
Arthur lived all his life in Ellesmere area and I presume he and Mary are buried in the area.

There are still living family but they are unable to recall any other info that may clear up the mystery that surrounds this man.
I live in Australia, so can only research on the internet.

Any help would be wonderful.

Hello

Where a child is born to unmarried parents the father's name could not be included on the birth certificate unless he was present at the time of registration. Possibly it could be added if he turned up later and admitted he was the father. If the parents married after the birth was originally registered then the father's name could be added and a new certificate issued (I have on in my family) and you might like to consider this as a possibility even though you say they didn't marry.

I have a feeling the name of the father on a marriage certificate can be a bit unreliable in these problem cases.

With regard to possible school records your best bet are School Admission Registers which will give the date of admission and leaving and the name of any other school the child moved from or to. It will also give the child's address and parent / guardian. The problems are that only some survive and even if they do they will be at Shropshire Archives or possibly still at the school so you will need to find someone local to help you with this.

If he died in Ellesmere he is most likely buried in the Ellesmere Cemetery.

Thanks Mike,

Re certificate there is a comment on the outer edge by the registar, that states the fathers name was added with the permission of the father.

Thanks for info about the schools, I'll see what I can find. There is a family member still living in area but he is in his 90's.

Thanks again.
