Hi,

Does anyone know the location of Appleyards Passage supposed to be in Abbey Foregate ?

I have a relation living there in 1911

Thanks

Hello Michael

Looking in 'Shrewsbury Street Names' by John L. Hobbs first printed 1954 it says,
"Appleyard's Passage - So called from the fact that the Barley Mow inn, which stood on the corner, was in 1868 kept by Robert Appleyard.  In Ranger's Report, 1854, it is called Barley Mow Street."

I have studied the reprint of the 1902 version of the 25 inch to 1 mile Ordnance Survey map for the area above but I cannot find any mention of these place names.  If you can find a similar scale map from a different date, or perhaps better an even larger scale map, you might get an answer.  Shropshire Archives have a good selection of maps.

There is a reference to Appleyard's Houses, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury which I presume is the same area.

Hi Mike,

Just back from a short holiday.

Thanks Mike for your help and it seems we both cannot find Appleyards Passage which is clearly stated on a wedding certificate in 1906 as well ..... as the home of the groom John OAKLEY. He married Alice HEATLEY at the register office so that does not help either.

Many thanks

Michael

Hello Michael

I am now reasonably certain I can tell you where Appleyards Passage used to be provided the house numbers haven't been changed in Abbey Foregate since the 1901 and 1911 census.

If you take a walk down Abbey Foregate to the Home Bargains shop, then just past their car park you will see Brook Road. The Ordnance Survey map I referred to above shows a P.H. (Public House - unnamed) with an unnamed passageway going down the side of it more or less where the Home Bargains shop joins its car park.

With this information I am sure you will be able to find something at Shropshire Archives to confirm this.  They may even have a photograph.
