Shropshire FHS Nov 2017 Monthly Meeting

Tue, 21/11/2017 - 19:00

Subject - "The Life & Times of a British Soldier during the Anglo Boer War"
Speaker - Graham Bradbury
Venue - The Old Chapel Community Centre, Cross Houses, Nr Shrewsbury SY5 6JH

Missing a relative in the 1901 census? They may have been serving in South Africa. Using original diaries, letters, postcards, telegrams & artefacts I will tell the story of what day to day life was like for the British soldier, from the call to arms in 1899, to the end of the Anglo Boer War in 1902. This talk uses two soldier’s diaries written by Lieutenants Crocker (1st Essex), & Murdoch (Lovat Scouts). It also gives some details of the activities of the KSLI (Kings Shropshire Light Infantry) during this war. There are some intriguing twists & stories to tell. Much of the talk material is from a book I published in 2006.
