SPEAKERS:
11.00 am
Subject - "The manor, its records and its people"
Speaker - Peter Park

The manor was an institution that affected almost every aspect of the lives of our English ancestors. And yet, despite all this, the records created by the system are sadly under-used by family historians. This talk seeks to show that the effort spent finding out about these records can be well rewarded. Manorial records are especially useful in amplifying other records and indeed may be the prime source when the parish registers are unreliable or missing. More than this however, they can enable us to put the everyday life of our ancestors under the microscope.

2.30 pm (Timing TBC)
Subject - "Illegitimacy and adoption: the historical background"
Speaker -
Eve McLaughlin
ILLEGITIMACY
There was always a lot of it about - as long as there have been men and
women, the moonlight and a jug of ale.   It is not the brick wall as regarded
by many, since the authorities were always anxious to make someone pay,
and their efforts have left a paper trail.   The CSA could learn a lot from the
old parish officers with their poor rated to consider.  Family rumours may add
spice, though they cannot always be relied on. It could occur in the most
elevated families though they have the means to hush things up and palm
the baby off on to someone else.
