MARTON (Near Chirbury) – The Story of a Shropshire Village
by Doreen Bowen & Felicity Bevan
Within these pages Marton’s history unfolds. From its humble beginnings; a cluster of lakeside huts built on a patch of dry land amidst marshland, the village becomes the 21st century community familiar today. Museums and archives have yielded their facts and figures but it is the reminiscences of older inhabitants – who have often recounted tales told to them by their own parents – that have brought Marton’s history to life. The memories of ordinary folk, the farmer, the shop keeper and the farmer’s wife, people who worked the land and played their part in the community are our link with the past.

SHROPSHIRE ALMSHOUSES by Sylvia Watts
Almshouses, in the shape of early ‘hospitals’, have been a feature of Shropshire from the 12C, although the majority of the 40 that survive were founded in the 17C & 19C. Founded by comparatively wealthy benefactors, they usually provided for the ‘deserving’ poor who had fallen on hard times. An Introduction surveys the architectural trends and also looks at the provision of almshouses across the county whilst the Gazetteer looks at each group of almshouses in detail, more so in some cases than in others due to the different survival rate of historical documents. The book provides a fascinating insight into the personalities of the founders, the problems faced by their descendants and the degree of social control imposed on the residents. Dr.Sylvia is a member of our Society and an expert in mediaeval Latin and sixteenth-century documents so well qualified to undertake much of the research necessary to write this book.

A SHROPSHIRE SQUIRE: Letters & Diary (1812-1825) of John Clavering Wood, Esquire, Marche Hall near Shrewsbury edited by Gerard Benjamin & Gloria Grant
How diverse were the interests of an 18C Shropshire country gentleman! Travel to Holland, grafting fruit trees, cider-making, bird-watching, book-buying, dealing with industrial pollution and Shrewsbury lawyers, and investing in locally-mined feldspar for Staffordshire china-making, all merit comment by the owner of the 350-acre Marche estate, off the Welshpool road, 10 miles from Shrewsbury and 2 miles from Westbury. Looming large was Wood’s friendship with poet and natural historian, John F.M. Dovaston (1782-1853) of West Felton near Oswestry, along with their mutual acquaintance, renowned wood engraver Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) of Gateshead. The 1819-1823 diary is complemented by 20 letters exchanged between J.C. Wood, Dovaston and Bewick. This well-illustrated book also includes more than 70 biographical notes plus extensive endnotes and index (mentioning more than 80 varieties of apple!).
